Pretty Sunlight

Is there anything better than pretty sunlight pouring through the windows in the kitchen? I'm loving these pictures. Hendrix has blond hair but here it looks so vibrantly red. I have been getting a lot of questions about Henry's hair. We have yet to cut it other than a couple bang trims which I regretted and am now growing his bangs out. Cutting his hair just hasn't been high on our list of priorities. Michael and I have decided that Hendrix will get a shape up soon since he is starting to have a pretty serious mullet. We get two very specific reactions to Henry's hair, some love it and others...not so much. People seem genuinely concerned when seeing that I have a little boy with long hair which is always kind of odd to me. Hair is such a tiny, insignificant part of life. We like his hair long and that's all. There is nothing more to it. I wasn't even going to address it since I just don't really think about it but I have been getting a lot of pressure to cut it. When Henry wants short hair, he will get it, Otherwise? It's a non issue in our house.

Do you have a boy with long hair? How about a girl with short? Ive always loved when little ladies have short little hair do's. What are your thoughts on the subject? If you disagree with me, let me know, I'm always interested in hearing what you all have to say.

  1. My hubby told me if we ever have a boy with curly hair, we are letting it grow! And my little girl's hair we are just going to let it grow as well, we've only cut it once. I had a dream last night that my mom chopped it off and I was crying! SO upset! I think your little guy's hair is cute:)

  2. I love Hendrix's hair. I think people are too judgmental. I would never imagine having a boy with long hair but I also don't have a boy but if I did and he had hair like Hendrix it would be totally different. I feel the same way about Amayas hair, I get sad just thinking about cutting her nice long hair. Hendrix is yours and Michael's son and I think people need to realize and accept that and the choices you guys make as his parents. I don't think I would question him being a boy or a girl because his face defiantly looks like a little boy:) and you dress him like a boy.

  3. I personally think his hair is gorgeous and it would be such a shame to cut it! I guess I can {sorta} see why people may have an issue with it. But, I also think he's your son and this issue, shouldn't really be an 'issue,' you know?

  4. Jules has always had long hair. And when he was able to talk, he would then tell us he didn't want it cut and that he wanted it long. He still tells me this. I take him for trims because his hair is crazy and insanely thick. Usually the trims end up a bit shorter than either of us would like and then he lets it grow out again. He gets called a girl and she a lot. But if you actually looked at him and his clothing, you would see all boy. I just correct everyone now, right after they say it "Boy. He's a boy. Actually, it's he ..." He does and has had issues with other kids while in school or out and about. "Why do you have long hair?" "You're weird" etc. etc. blah blah. Honestly, we've heard it so much that it is a non-issue for us. He is confident enough to not care what others think either. In fact, he wants to grow it longer. I said "but they might really call you a girl, then ..." He said "I don't care what they think Mom" ...

  5. My best friend went through the same thing with her handsome little man when he was that age. I think it's so silly when people (especially strangers) are so opinionated about your children. I feel it's such an unimportant issue for people to even have an opinion about. He's YOUR son, not theirs. Worry about your own kid's hair! He is obviously very loved by you and your husband, that's what matters.

  7. I'm with you. I plan to grow my boys long and if I ever have a girl it will be a short pixie cut. Until they have an opinion on the matter of course!

  8. We had gotten so much pressure when Jack was younger over his hair. It wasn't THAT long and it was curly and adorable. He looked like a baby Jim Morrison. I finally buckled and cut it right before our Tucson summer hit the 100 degree mark, figuring it would be a relief to him to not have all that hair to sweat under. I immediately regretted it. Now that his father and I have divorced it's an odd situation. I want to let his hair grow wild again and then on one of my days he'll get dropped off at my place with a brand new short haircut again. I miss his curly hair.

  9. Hendrix has awesome hair. Q has long-ish hair, not nearly as long as Hendrix's but definitely longer than any of the other boys in his preschool class. I like that both of them are a little different from the average boy. I'm curious to see how Q will want it when he gets older, but for now it's fun that we get to choose how to dress and style our boys. And you're right, not that big of a deal in the scheme of things.

  10. You really learn a lot about what boys have to contend with in our culture once you have one, don't you?

We, just like you and yours, are not cutting the boy's hair until he wants it cut. It hurts our hearts to see little boys with man hair cuts looking all grown up and out of place, but that's a personal thing, I suppose. I think hair is super important and says so much about people. Like, when you leave your hair alone, or your baby's hair, you're saying something. Something along the lines of, this baby is wild and free, and he's not going in any box until he tries the four walls out himself.

    xo!

  11. I just can't believe that anyone would even think about the length of a child's hair as an issue!! Good grief. He is gorgeous and I LOVE his hair! xo

  12. I have always loved the Devendra Banhart song "Long Haired Child". There is nothing more free and lovely than being a child, and nothing exemplifies that more than a child with their beautiful, natural uncut hair :)

  13. I've always wanted Judah to have long hair, but my husband talked me into going to Cartoon Cuts about a week or so ago to get the back "trimmed" just around the ears. I asked her not to cut the top which she did, and I cried. I don't think I am going to get it cut again for awhile, I miss his adorable mullet he was born with

  14. My son (he'll be 2.5 in March) has long-ish, hippie baby hair much like Hendrix. Infact, sometimes I think they are a bit similar looking.

I love his shaggy hair and have never had a problem with it. Honestly, sometimes when I think of him without it, it seems so strange to me (although I do realize he's going to need a shape up at least, soon!). I've given him bang trims because his hair will often get in his eyes but he has yet to get a real cut yet.

He's often (I'd say most the time) mistaken for a girl. I don't care at all but I do get tired of the internal dilemma of "Well, should I tell them he's a boy? Or should I just let them think he's a girl?" In instances where I have corrected the person, they usually get extremely apologetic, as if calling my son a girl is an enormous insult. I'm like SHRUG "he gets it all the time, no bigs!"

I also get asked when he's going to get his first hair cut a lot. It's such a trivial thing for me and something I rarely think about, I wish people didn't care as much! Haha.

Also, here is a picture of my shaggy boy!

  15. I have kept my daughters short... at first it just wouldn't grow and now she is 2 and I like it that way. Keep it long and forget everyone else.

  16. these are beautiful photos! i don't understand why people even care about a little boys hair being long?? my son jonas had long hair until his 5th birthday when he asked to cut it short, which broke my heart! but i had to respect his decision. he's now 6.5 and asked to grow it long again!

i think your son is beautiful the way he is ;) and i'm new around here...is his name hendrix? fabulous name!

and, i had short hair all my life. i was mistaken for a boy often. it must have never bothered my mom because she still kept my hair short!

  17. My son's hair has still yet to really sprout but we got into a conversation about it with relatives recently that I felt was weird. They asked if we had cut it (no) and then I told them we didn't really have much intention to cut it when it really started growing. Then they just repeatedly said, "Eventually you'll have to do it. Eventually you'll have to do it." OF COURSE at some point in his life he'll have his hair cut but it very much came across like soon enough it will start growing and little boys can't have long hair so we'll have to cut it. We'll just see about that! :)

  18. I love it! My son is 21 months and we haven't cut his hair once. He's rocking one of the sweetest curly mullets I have ever seen. I get questions a lot as to when he may be getting it cut and if I'm intending to be "cruel" to him for allowing such hair. Who gives a rip what anyone else thinks and frankly it is none of their business. You have one handsome little man there who appears to be rather adored by both parents. More power to you!

  19. We moved to the South...NC to be exact...two months ago and I've been extremely annoyed with all the people who call my son a girl because he has long hair. I mean he's 4 so he thinks it's pretty lame too. I love little boys with long hair. We're from California and it was never an issue there. His dad has long hair and I'm pretty sure he won't be mistaken for a girl. Why are people so out of touch????
